FAQ

Everything, not just the highlights on the homepage.

How do I check if a business name is already taken?

Check it in every place someone could actually collide with it: the domain, the USPTO trademark database, your state's business registry, and the social handles you'd actually want. Most people only check the domain, then find out later the name is trademarked or already a company in their state. That's the actual gap this tool exists to close.

Is a "no matching trademark found" result the same as legal clearance?

No. It's a database search, not a legal opinion. Unregistered common-law rights, marks in other classes, and pending applications not yet indexed can still pose real risk. Talk to a qualified attorney before committing real money or reputation to a name.

How is this different from just searching a domain registrar?

A registrar only tells you about domains. This also checks trademarks and social handles, and — the actual point of the product — never suggests an alternative name it hasn't already verified itself.

Can two businesses have the same name?

Often, yes, at least partially. State LLC registration only blocks an identical name within that one state. A federal trademark blocks use in the same or related goods/services categories nationwide, but only if one's actually registered. Domain and social handles are first-come-first-served, unrelated to either. A name can be totally fine on all three and still not be yours everywhere.

Does forming an LLC protect my business name?

Only in the state you formed it in, and only against another LLC using the identical name there. It doesn't give you trademark rights, doesn't stop someone in another state from using the name, and doesn't reserve the matching domain or social handles. Those are separate things you have to check and secure on their own.

Do you store the names I search?

No. The name you type is sent to our server to run the checks and isn't stored, logged long-term, or linked to you. See the privacy policy for the full detail.

How do you check social handles without logging in?

X and TikTok have real, checkable signals in their own server responses, no login needed. Instagram and Facebook don't have a reliable version of that from our infrastructure, so those stay one-click manual links for now.

Are the domain registration and LLC-formation links affiliate links?

Some of them, yes. If you sign up or buy through one, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. It has no bearing on what gets checked or what status is reported. Full disclosure is on the privacy & disclaimer page.

Does nameroni work for names outside the US?

Partially. Domain checks and the social handles it checks live (X, TikTok) work anywhere. The USPTO trademark search and state-registry guidance are US-specific — outside the US, you'd need your own country's trademark office and business registry instead.

Can I check multiple names at once?

Not on the free tier or Starter today. Batch mode is part of the Agency tier, built for checking a client's shortlist in one pass instead of one at a time.
